I've had an interest in photography since my school days. We were encouraged to borrow school equipment and I was lucky enough to be able to practice on a Pentax K1000 35mm camera from an early age. Since leaving University and working in the field of Graphic Design, photography has become even more important to me and two years ago I decided to treat myself to a new camera, to use both in Dynamics's day-to-day projects and to use at weekends.

After researching the market, I decided on a Nikon D50 Digital SLR - an entry-level Digital SLR camera that is fantastic both in the office, on location or just for holiday shots.  I was recently asked why I chose such a bulky (and expensive) camera!  For me there was no other choice, but for those who wonder why a smaller digital camera just doesn't achieve that same quality, here's a few benefits of using a Digital SLR...

- Single Lens Reflex (SLR)

A Digital SLR camera uses mirrors just like an ordinary film SLR. This enables you to see exactly what will appear on the camera once the image is taken. This shutter system give instant results and great control.

- Interchangeable Lenses

The ability to change lens makes the camera suitable for any situation. Adding a proper zoom lens can make those dream wildlife shots a reality! Using interchangeable lenses also gives scope for adding filters for dramatic in-camera effects.

- Digital Technology

The LCD screen combines the classic SLR with new technology giving the best of both worlds. Some Digital SLRs now offer 'Live Preview' LCD screens giving even more flexibility.

Of course, quality equipment will never replace the skill and creativity of a good photographer. I'll be continuing to add developments of my own photography on the Dynamics Media Blog and will try to share tips from the professionals.
